Copystar CS 1505

You wouldn’t expect a copier like this to be in a draughtsman’s office, but there was one in the office I work in. It sat in the corner, the Copystar CS-1505. It wasn’t used to reproduce the drafts, but it was used for everything else. My boss like it because it was cheap to buy, cheap to run and never broke down.

The design isn’t the most cutting edge you will ever see, but it is one of the most reliable and hassle free. The lid lifts up to reveal the platen. The lid can also work as a document feeder if you have the option, which is a nice relief when I have to copy multiple sheets. The manual duplexer also makes light work of anything I throw at it, and while it isn’t an automatic one like on some of the newer machines I have used, this is as solid and dependable as you can get.

Copy quality is very good. It is a mono copier, but we don’t really use color all that much. We use it to produce internal documentation as well as invoices, and general letters. The boss like to keep a copy of absolutely everything, so there is plenty of work for the CS-1505 to do. Text is very clear, there is no toner spill anywhere, the only ink on the page is where the letters are. The rest of the sheet always remains perfectly clear. Sometimes we have to copy oversized text, which can cause problems for some copiers. Not so with this one. The letters are all black, the edges all straight and good looking overall.

Copying photos or documents that contain photos has always been a bit hit and miss with laser copiers. This copier manages them okay. They can be a little low on detail sometimes, but there isn’t the bad shading or bands that appears on some. I think that copying any kind of document works well with this machine, and at 15 pages a minute copying speed doesn’t keep us hanging around too much either.

If you want something solid and dependable in your office the CS-1505 is a good place to start. It does everything a copier should, as well as a good copier should and have given us no problems in over a year. Toner is easy to acquire and replace and is enough to print up to 7000 pages. I like it because it’s simple and works well and the boss likes it because it’s cheap. A great combination.

HP LaserJet 2100

I have used the HP LaserJet 2100 to print out student assignments for a little over four years and it’s still going strong. It was initially a little overpowered for my needs, which is predominantly text essays with the occasional graphic, but it bore the HP brand, which I value for their quality.

It isn’t the most subtle device, it’s quite large and can get noisy if given a large print run to handle. Apart from that it’s no problem whatsoever to live with and maintain. While it is network capable, I have it directly connected to my computer and don’t share it, so I can’t comment on the network capabilities. The main benefit, apart from decent performance is that it warms up from standby almost instantly and the cartridges are those all in one sorts that negates the need for me to purchase drums as well as toner.

Print speed I understand is average at around 10 pages per minute. It slows down a bit when it has to deal with images, to about 8 if I were to hazard a guess. That’s perfectly fine for me, as it’s the quality I’m most interested in. I need good quality prints so I can read them properly. My students have to type their assignments in order for me to mark them effectively so the least I can do is print them legibly.

The print quality of the HP 2100 is very good for text. Each letter coming out details and definite whatever the size. Like I said, I can’t comment on photo printing because I don’t really do it, but text is good.

The construction is solid, the paper trays seem flexible but strong and the control panel is refreshingly simple. It comprises of three buttons and three LEDs, which is ideal for me. I don’t want complicated panels and screens and all that.

The HP LaserJet 2100 is a solid, dependable printer that hasn’t let me down in years. Apart from the odd paper jam, this thing has worked week in-week out since I bought it. I can thoroughly recommend this printer, and HP products in general.

Ricoh Aficio 2045

The Ricoh Aficio 2045 is a heavy duty office printer, scanner and copier, for heavy duty use in busy offices. It is a machine that can produce good reproduction at 45 pages per minute. There is also the option to add faxing capabilities to it, if you so desire.

The built-in 64Mb of memory and built-in 20Gb hard drive ensures that the Aficio 2045 can cope with the largest print jobs. The toners standard 30000 page life also lends itself well to a heavy use machine.

This printer and copier is quality. It can produce prints up to a resolution of 600 dpi at a rate of 45 pages per minute. The first page is delivered within 10 seconds of pressing print too, which is good for such a large device. The reproduction is excellent, with text showing as sharp, with clear, clean edges and good spread. Images are accurate and clear, with the shading even and without any obvious bleeding or jagging on the edges.

The control panel is well thought out and simple to use. There are large buttons that allows you to choose between copy and scan and the bright LCD clearly shows you what you’re doing. It is one of the largest LCD screens we have seen on a copier, and it very easy to read. It’s also a touch screen, which adds much flexibility to the control system, merely by having the ability to press the appropriate command on the screen rather than hunting for the button.

There are two 500 sheet paper trays, which can be expanded to a maximum 3500 sheets with the purchase of optional paper drawers. There is also a bypass tray that can hold 50 sheets, while the output can handle 250. Everything feels reassuringly solid, which is a good thing with a machine this big.

The Aficio 2045 also has a full duplexer for double-sided printing and copying, full network capabilities and supports PCL and PostScript, so can be used with any operating system. The scanner has scan to mail, and the ability to scan over a network too.

Being able to buy toner at $20 for 30000 pages is a bargain. That is an ideal economy for an office busy enough to warrant buying a Aficio 2045. With a solid built, and heavy duty cycle, this machine is built to work all day every day.

Lexmark C532

It wasn’t all that long ago that color laser printers were regarded as too expensive for most offices to even contemplate using. Not only were they expensive to purchase, they were also expensive to use. Gradually over time, companies like Xerox began producing good quality laser printers only slightly more expensive than decent inkjets. This opened the market for other manufacturers to get in on the act and this is where we find ourselves now.

The Lexmark C532 is another quality printer from a name that is already ubiquitous with quality. Like the other members of the “C” class the C532 punches way above its weight in terms of cost and performance.

It’s difficult to find something new to say about these printers as they all offer great value for money and print really well. Text reproduction is the high point of the C532. Edges were straight, shading was complete, no jaggies and no fuzziness at lower points. Image reproduction was no surprise either. Both photos and images were reproduced accurately in both color and monochrome. The grayscale does an excellent approximation of the colors and there is no detail lost in translation. There were no artifacts, or banding like you see with many other, more expensive lasers.

Setting the C532 up was as easy as unpacking it and connecting it. Once powered, it was automatically discovered on the network and were configured in minutes. Starter toners are included which are good for a thousand sheets each, which isn’t so great but replacements are easy to acquire and reasonably priced. A new black toner will last for 4000 pages, and the color ones 3000 and are $70 and $75 respectively.

We would have no hesitation recommending the C532 to a small or home office. It is more than competent enough to handle even the most demanding print jobs, even image heavy ones.

With a decent duty cycle, long lasting toners the C532 would quite at home in a busy office environment. Anybody looking for an affordable color laser printer with quality finishing should look no further than the Lexmark C532.

Brother MFC 8500

Some of the best multi-function printers available in the market today are manufactured by Brother and Canon. The Brother MFC-8500 is perfect to use in office environments where there are at least 3000 pages to print every single month.

It has advanced features and is the perfect definition of what multi-function printers should be. It can handle high volume workloads and keeps on going without much intervention, so is a good investment in the longer term. It has the ability to scan multi-page faxes into memory at a very good pace, then also sends them out even quicker. It scans up to 9,000 dpi and prints 600 dpi. It prints and copies with a speed of up to 15 pages per minute. There are three easy to use scan buttons located on the front panel and it has a scanning resolution of 9,600 x 9,600.

The fax machine comes with the usual call waiting services, and caller. It’s also able to scan faxes in two seconds, which boosts productivity no end. The copier has the ability to enlarge copies up to 50 to 100 percent and the software that comes with this printer is the ScanSoft PaperPort and TextBridge OCR to help with better quality scans. Again it is preferably for office use in a commercial setting and will work with almost any Windows and Apple application. It has excellent print quality and is available at an affordable price.

The instruction manual that comes with this machine is very helpful and it has an easy installation procedure. This printer also has the ability to send and broadcast faxes directly and it has USB and parallel ports. It comes with a 30 sheet automatic document feeder, an 8MB ram standard and a 250 sheet paper tray with an additional 250 tray able to be attached. The telephone index in this machine has the ability to save numbers automatically and it even has an automatic legal to letter fax reduction.

Print quality is all important, even in a multi-function. There are no worries here, even though the chassis is stuffed full of features, the core printer capability is first rate. Text is clear, distinctive and ideal for office use. Images are clean, definitive if lacking in the occasional detail. Otherwise the device is top notch and will grace any office. Toner use is also minimal, so you don’t have to change the cartridges all the time.

Konica Minolta MagiColor 2430dl

I have used the Konica Minolta MagiColor 2430dl since I bought it new in 2005. It hasn’t let me down since then, and is still going strong for when I need a longer document.

I print a lot of photographs, so was quite hesitant about using a laser. They have never been able to print in as much detail as I needed, but the 2430dl surprised me when I saw it in action. Mono documents are excellent. Blacks are really black, edges are crisp and straight and mono images use the grayscale very accurately.

There is an element of dithering on color photographs but not enough to stop me using it. The ability to print a large document with a couple of photos in it without it costing me the earth is why I like the printer, and still use it today.

For a full color printer, the MagiColor 2430dl is quite small. It’s about the size of a normal personal printer, but can handle so much more. It comes with starter toners, which are only a third full, which is about standard for the industry, but they are easily changed by lifting the top and removing the drum. The whole procedure can be done in a couple of minutes and you’re back in action again.

The only negative thing I would say about this printer is that the paper tray is quite small. If you print larger, or longer documents as I do, the 200 sheet paper tray can empty quite quickly. You have to be ready to add more, especially if printing a manuscript or something.

As an added bonus there is a PictBridge port on the front of the MagiColor 2430dl. This means you can connect a digital camera directly to it and print. I don’t use it, and I doubt many people will, but it’s a nice addition even if you have to upgrade the memory to be able to do it.

The print speed is the main reason I went laser. It manages around 18 pages per minute for monochrome, and 5 for color. While it won’t break any speed records, it’s excellent for the price. This cost little more than a decent inkjet when it was new, so the performance you get for the money is excellent.

Overall the MagiColor 2430dl is a great little printer. It does everything you need it to do and doesn’t clamor for attention all the time. The only time I pay it any mind is refilling that paper tray or when it needs new cartridges. It’s all I ask of a printer to be honest.

Open Prepress Interface

A workflow protocol developed by Aldus Corporation used in electronic prepress to link desktop publishing systems and high-end CEPS. Essentially, high-resolution color images are stored on a central network server, to which all the workstations are connected. Low-resolution files are sent by the server to individual computers working on page layout. The low-res images are imported into the page (in a kind of FPO way), positioned, and comments sent back to the OPI server provide specific cropping, scaling, positioning, and color information about the image. The servers PostScript driver inserts the proper instructions into the PostScript code. When the page is ultimately output to an imagesetter connected to the network, the high-resolution image is swapped for the low-res one, and the indicated instructions as to cropping, etc., are executed. The work with layout documents which include big graphic files (high resolution, big size) may become a test for someone’s patience due to the rate of the processing. The dealing with this kind of files, which need a lot of memory in the workflow, can be simplified with an Open Prepress Interface (OPI) System. Although the PCs and networks become constantly faster and powerful, OPI is used for the Prepress workflow in order to minimize the waiting period. It is in use for 10 years now, but only a few people know this application. If a graphic file is placed into a document, layout applications normally integrate the whole graphic file. If the graphic files are big, the processing of the document becomes very slow due to the quantity of the graphic data. The resources needed by the PC and the network (if used) are unnecessary, because low resolution graphic files are sufficient for the work on a monitor in order to create the layout or to judge the colours. Because of this, OPI-programs create low-resolution graphic files with the same dimensions and place them into the layout document instead of the originals. The high-resolution files are integrated by an OPI-server just after the print job is started. The OPI-server finds the data by so called OPI-comments, which are included in the PostScript print file or in a PDF file. These OPI-comments describe, among other things, the memory needed, the sizes, and the position of the graphics in the layout document. Another aspect is the possibility to share the work of one project between the graphics and the layout, because the final graphics are embedded after the print job is started.
OPI is useful for minimizing high-resolution-file travel on networks; their large file size can make traffic screech to a halt. And by utilizing only low-resolution viewfiles on workstations, processing speed is increased. The efficacy of OPI is contingent upon the use on the workstations of OPI-compatible software; many page layout programs are increasingly including support for OPI, although some OPI specifications for color separation havent been effectively nailed down yet. Although OPI is often compared to DCS, the latter is strictly a color separation protocol, while the former is more of a workflow protocol.

What is Network

A computer network is a group of interconnected computers. Networks make it possible for several people to share data and peripherals simultaneously. If many people need to use a printer, they can all use the printer available on the network. Computer network is comprised of connectivity devices and components. To share data and resources between two or more computers is known as networking. There are different types of a computer network such as LAN, MAN, WAN and wireless network. The key devices involved that make the infrastructure of a computer network are Hub, Switch, Router, Modem, Access point, LAN card and network cables. Before the advent of networks, computer users needed their own printers, plotters, and other peripherals; the only way users could share a printer was to take turns sitting at the computer connected to the printer. A network can be any size. For Example, connecting two home computers so they can share data creates a simple network. Companies can have networks consisting of a few dozen computers or hundreds of computers. The Internet is the worlds largest network and connects millions of computers all over the world.
Network devices are connected in different ways called “topology”. Topology refers to the physical layout of the network i.e. the locations of the computers and how the cable is run between them. To select the right topology for how the network will be used is very important. Each topology has its own strength and weaknesses. Lets have a look upon popular network topologies:

Star / hierarchical- Computers in a star topology are connected by cables to a hub. In this topology management of the network is made much easier (such as adding and removing devices), because of the central point. However because it is centralized more cable is required.

Bus - In bus topologies, all computers are connected to a single cable or "trunk or backbone", by a transceiver either directly or by using a short drop cable. All ends of the cable must be terminated, that is plugged into a device such as a computer or terminator. Most bus topologies use coax cables.
Mesh - A Mesh topology Provides each device with a point-to-point connection to every other device in the network. These are most commonly used in WANs, which connect networks over telecommunication links. Mesh topologies use routers to determine the best path.
Ring - In a ring topology network computers are connected by a single loop of cable, the data signals travel around the loop in one direction, passing through each computer. Ring topology is an active topology because each computer repeats (boosts) the signal before passing it on to the next computer.
Wireless - A wireless network consists of wireless NICs and access points. NICs come in different models including PC Card, ISA, PCI, etc. Access points act as wireless hubs to link multiple wireless NICs into a single subnet. Access points also have at least one fixed Ethernet port to allow the wireless network to be bridged to a traditional wired Ethernet network, such as the organization’s network infrastructure. Wireless and wired devices can coexist on the same network.
Understanding basics of networking will help you to configure and share network printers.

HP Color LaserJet 1600

The HP Color LaserJet 1600 is an entry level small business printer that seems to promise little but delivers much. It sits quite upright in a more vertical position, with a large flap at the front which hides the cartridges and the belt, which adds a lot to the ease of maintenance. The paper lives in the bottom, a 250 sheet drawer and a single feeder for envelopes and the like.

The printer comes packed almost ready to work. The cartridges are already in place and ready once you remove the travel tape. You just have to connect the USB, install the drivers and off you go. Couldnt be easier.

The driver package includes the user manual, PCL and PostScript drivers and a decent range of tools for operating the printer. Its easy to change color depth, toner use, and other features from the desktop, which we find much easier than pressing buttons on the device itself. There are only three to press, and a small LCD screen to look at. The screen shows the basic status information, toner level and not much more, but its all you need really.

Printed pages appear at a rate of around 6 per minute. The print quality is good, especially with text as each character appears well drawn, detailed and sharp, even at smaller points. Graphics and images are both printed well either mono or color, with defined gradients, good detail and even spread on larger pieces. There is a manual duplexer included which worked well, there were no jams or problems feeding the paper like we have seen in other manual printers.

The HP Color LaserJet 1600 is a decent, inexpensive printer to install and use. Running costs are reasonable as replacement toners are only around $56 for black (2500 pages) and $57 for colors (2000 pages). The easy access to the moving parts means freeing jams and replacing cartridges can be done in seconds. Print quality is good and reliability seems sound. A good option for those with smaller workloads who still want a quality printer.
