Brother MFC 8500

Some of the best multi-function printers available in the market today are manufactured by Brother and Canon. The Brother MFC-8500 is perfect to use in office environments where there are at least 3000 pages to print every single month.

It has advanced features and is the perfect definition of what multi-function printers should be. It can handle high volume workloads and keeps on going without much intervention, so is a good investment in the longer term. It has the ability to scan multi-page faxes into memory at a very good pace, then also sends them out even quicker. It scans up to 9,000 dpi and prints 600 dpi. It prints and copies with a speed of up to 15 pages per minute. There are three easy to use scan buttons located on the front panel and it has a scanning resolution of 9,600 x 9,600.

The fax machine comes with the usual call waiting services, and caller. It’s also able to scan faxes in two seconds, which boosts productivity no end. The copier has the ability to enlarge copies up to 50 to 100 percent and the software that comes with this printer is the ScanSoft PaperPort and TextBridge OCR to help with better quality scans. Again it is preferably for office use in a commercial setting and will work with almost any Windows and Apple application. It has excellent print quality and is available at an affordable price.

The instruction manual that comes with this machine is very helpful and it has an easy installation procedure. This printer also has the ability to send and broadcast faxes directly and it has USB and parallel ports. It comes with a 30 sheet automatic document feeder, an 8MB ram standard and a 250 sheet paper tray with an additional 250 tray able to be attached. The telephone index in this machine has the ability to save numbers automatically and it even has an automatic legal to letter fax reduction.

Print quality is all important, even in a multi-function. There are no worries here, even though the chassis is stuffed full of features, the core printer capability is first rate. Text is clear, distinctive and ideal for office use. Images are clean, definitive if lacking in the occasional detail. Otherwise the device is top notch and will grace any office. Toner use is also minimal, so you don’t have to change the cartridges all the time.

Brother HL 5140

The Brother HL-5140 is a competitive monochrome printer that offers high quality prints with the ability to expand the device should it become necessary.

The HL-5140 is one of Brothers range of workhorse printers. Nothing to look at but offers solid dependability while producing good quality, high resolution prints for days on end. This device is ideal for the small business who isn’t worried about printing in color who wants a good value, long lasting printer.

Printing at 20 pages per minute at 600 dpi, the HL-5140 works quickly enough to be productive, but produces quality enough to suit most needs. It warms up in 18 seconds, and once warm will have a completed print on the tray 10 seconds after pressing the print button. Both figures quite respectable at this budget.

Despite being designed for the smaller business, the HL-5140 can cope with large print jobs thanks to the 133Mhz SPARC processor and 16Mb of memory. If that wasn’t enough, the memory is upgradeable to a decent 144Mb. Manual duplexing allows for all that power to be utilized in producing double sided prints too. The 250 sheet standard paper drawer is also partnered by a single sheet feeder and a 150 sheet output tray. There is also an optional paper tray to expand the paper capacity by a further 250 sheets.

To add to the functionality, the printer natively supports different sized paper, envelopes, labels and card stock. This can make printing business literature, marketing blurb and business cards a breeze.

Setup is quick and easy. Connection is by USB or parallel port, and the drivers are installed on each client machine. There is an option to purchase Ethernet or wireless connectors too, which adds flexibility if more was needed.

Toner is readily available and easy to refresh. A simple clip mechanism allows quick removal and replacement, keeping downtime to a minimum. New cartridges are reasonably priced with the high yield variants able to produce up to 6500 pages of standard business documents.

With the expansion potential of the extra paper drawer, networking options and expandable memory, this is an ideal printer for the new business who is set to grow. Adding these elements to an existing printer of a good quality is much cheaper than constantly upgrading and offers a cost effective printing option.

The reasonable cost of consumables, and these scalable features, coupled with the good text reproduction leaves me with no hesitation in recommending this product. Overall, a great printer.

Brother HL 1440

Printers are one of the few areas of technology where the price goes down as the quality goes up.  Brother is one of those companies who offer more to every evolution of their products, but charge either the same or less for them.

Take the HL-1440 monochrome printer for instance.  An improvement in almost every way to its predecessor the HL-1430 yet, retailing for the same price.  It much is quicker, more reliable, has less jams, and better drivers than the earlier model.

The upgrades include a faster 66Mhz processor, and faster electronics throughout.  The only disappointment is with the tiny 2mb memory.  Most printers offer at least 8mb to store documents for printing or scanning.  It does redeem itself slightly with an easily expandable memory slot via a standard DIMM.  The memory can then be expanded to 34Mb which is much more suitable to a busy environment.

The laser print quality is excellent.  Text appears clean and crisp at 600dpi, as do any embedded text or images.  Photographic reproduction is also beyond fault at 1200 x 600 dpi.  Details are sharp and the translations from color image to monochrome print is well done.  No lines, smears or banding could be seen when testing.

Setting the printer up is simple and straightforward.  Just plug it in and connect it to a computer via the USB or parallel port.  The driver CD is comprehensive and contains everything you need to get started.  The user manual is easy to follow, and offers clear instruction as well as basic troubleshooting tips if you encounter problems.

Maintenance of the HL-1440 once it’s up and running is pretty easy.  Blockages can be cleared with ease thanks to the movable paper loader and tray.  Toner can be quickly and easily be replaced once the included starter cartridge has been exhausted.  The ink is in powder form so won’t dry out like inkjet printers.  The HL-1440 is also frugal enough not to waste toner wherever necessary so owners will find their cartridges lasting surprisingly long.

Overall the HL-1440 is an excellent office printer.  It does everything well.  While not standing out by being amazing, it will still be churning out good quality copies and prints long after many, more expensive units have given up the ghost.

For businesses looking to invest in a good quality laser printer, without paying the laser printer premium, the HL-1440 is a very good investment.  It’s easy to install and configure, easy to use, the cartridges last a respectable time and are easy to obtain from the internet.  Places like quickshiptoner.com can have them to you the next day.

Brother MFC 8460N Large Printer with Extra Large LCD

The Brother MFC-8460N is another all in one printer from the Brother line that pretty much does everything and, for the price, does it well. In fact, the only thing that really stands out about it is the fairly huge LCD display Brother decided to put on the front of the unit, making this model particularly easy to navigate. Up to 22 large characters per line and the convenient backlight settle it: this is a big LCD.

Besides the beefy navigation screen, the MFC-8460N is putting up some big numbers across the board. Most notably being the particularly large scan resolution of 19200 X 19200 dots per inch interpolated, which can be used congruently with another oversized feature of the product, a 50 page auto document feeder that helps when managing large quantities of paper that need to be copied, faxed, or scanned. The always convenient, “Scan to,” features let you scan your time and memory consuming high resolution images directly to an e mail or a PDF file. With resolutions that high, and a ADF that large, you could even consider setting up a project that required a huge quantity of extremely high res scans for overnight operation to save yourself the hassle of having to check when each image was complete. Also, legal sized and color scans are also welcome thanks to the large document glass.

Who doesn’t like large amounts of paper? The 250 sheet paper capacity of the unit is expandable with an auxiliary tray of equal size. Interestingly, the MFC-8460N also comes complete with a 50 sheet multi purpose tray, not always seen in office grade printers of the sort, which brings your total possible paper capacity to 550 sheets. Also on the expandable features list is the on board memory, which comes stock at a decent 32 MBs, but can be upgraded to an astounding 544 MBs.
Network incorporation is a must for many high yield businesses and, though the MFC-8460N doesn’t have a wireless modem, it does come equipped with an Ethernet port to get your office connected. Also included are a USB port and a Parallel port if your demands require the use of only a single Macintosh or PC.  Either way, speed will not be an issue as the hardware is capable of churning out 30 pages per minute or quality of up to 1200 X 1200 dots per inch, which will insure that your projects look professional and neat in a short amount of time.

As is often seen in many of the larger units such as this, a high yield replacement toner cartridge is available, meaning you’ll receive more bang for your buck when it comes to ink, and also suffer through less cartridge changes. If your business insists on high monthly output, shaving pennies at a time can add up quickly, and the MFC-8460N can take the abuse as well, sporting a maximum monthly duty cycle of 20,000 words, though 500 to 3,500 is recommended.

The Brother MFC-8460N is seated squarely in the middle of a long line of Brother Multifunctional Centers and, like its brothers and sisters, is a relatively good buy for the money.
