Konica Minolta MagiColor 2530dl

The Konica Minolta MagiColor 2530dl is another inexpensive color laser printer from the Japanese camera giant. It continues the line of good quality office machinery that it started a while ago, and just keeps in getting better. It builds on previous models, improving print quality, built quality and upgradeability options. It now has twice the memory, a decent 64Mb rather than the 32Mb of before.

This is a device that would suit a small or home office based business with low to moderate printing needs. Reliability is one of the mainstays of this machine. It can print good quality monochrome pages at up to 15 pages per minute at 600 dpi, and decent quality color ones at around 5 pages per minute. It supports Windows, Linux and Mac for true versatility and can be networked or run from USB.

The build quality is typical Konica, compact but sturdy with nothing that looks like it would fall off any time soon. The MagiColor 2530dl is supplied with a 200 sheet paper tray, with the option of increasing that to 500 with an extra tray purchase. Toner cartridges are easily replaceable after they have served their 4500 page yield, simply lift up the top, expose the carousel and change whichever one needs it. Replacements are reasonably priced at an approximate cost of $65 each.

The control panel is simple and straightforward with decent sized buttons and a clear LCD screen. There isn’t much for it to do though, as it’s far easier to use the PageScope software to control it from a PC. Connecting the printer to a network takes less than five minutes. In our tests we simply attached the cat5 cable to our router and the printer was discovered within seconds. It then made itself available to everyone on the test workgroup who could print as soon as they had the drivers. This ease of use is a hallmark of Konica. They try very hard to make their devices as simple to use and maintain as possible without compromising features.

The 2530dl is a solid performer. Ideal for the small or home business who wants a good quality multifunction printer at a decent price. Consumables are well priced and offer decent yield so the Konica Minolta MagiColor 2530dl won’t cost a fortune to own.

Panasonic DP 2310

If you need fast, high quality printing from a manufacturer you can trust, the Panasonic DP-2310 is the device for you. From basic copying of documents, minutes or emails to the production of stapled reports, or marketing materials, the DP-2310 delivers.

It can print and copy up to 23 pages per minute at a resolution of 600 dpi. The 256 grayscale tones allows accurate reproduction of mono or full-color images. Panasonics image stabilizing technology controls the laser much better which allows a much finer print. This gives the DP-2310 over its competitors by allowing it to produce a much finer, and more exact print finish. Couple this with the finer particles used in Panasonic toners, and you can begin to see why the print reproduction is so good.

The half VGA LCD screen provides fast access to the device functions as well as helps users learn how to use the device. The helpful graphical representations on screen allows users to be walked through the processes, and informs them of status.

The optional fax kit for the DP-2310 transforms it into a high performance multifunction device. The Super G3 modem transmits at 33.6kbps and can send a legal sized document to up to 220 destinations at once.

The DP-2310 can be connected via network or USB and comes complete with a comprehensive driver suite and productivity tools. Automatic network discovery allows it to find and join a workgroup automatically and will work immediately the drivers are installed on the client machines.

The DP-2310 can be controlled completely from the desktop using the tools provided. The software, and the control panel both offer a before and after view of the document you are about to process. This is an excellent feature that lets you preview the finished document to ensure it’s the right quality. This saves time, and consumables as the document can be manipulated before actually printing.

There are a whole raft of options that you can add to the DP-2310 if you want to. Extra paper trays, document finishers, network scanners, document handlers, extra memory and a hard drive. This all means that the machine is a truly modular device that can evolve and grow with the business it serves.

Samsung SCX 4725FN

Multifunction printers are great when space is limited. They are ideal for the small or home office as they are cost-effective, and perform the role of four devices all in one chassis.

The Samsung SCX-4725FN is aimed squarely at the small or home office market. While it certainly isn’t the best looking appliance in the world, it is useful, and very good at what it does. The size is average for a multifunction device, measuring 20 inches wide, with a minimal lip at the top for the scanner flatbed. This is larger than a standalone printer, but on-par for a multifunction.

Print quality is precisely what you would expect from a Samsung. Text appears crisp, with clean edges. Images reproduction pushes the grayscale a bit with a few jaggies and a bit of banding but nothing that would spoil the effect. Overall, toner spread was even and detailed enough for most needs.

The user manual is easy to read and have you up and running in no time at all. Installing the toner and drum can be a fiddly affair, no such problems with the SCX-4725FN. They both slide easily into the drawer and clip into place. Loading paper is just as straightforward, with the paper tray also being at the front at the bottom. Fill it up and off you go. It isn’t a paper drawer like many others, this is an actual tray that protrudes a bit from the front.

If you want a standalone copier, scanner and fax, this is all you have to do to get productive. If you want to use it in conjunction with a computer, you merely need to install the drivers and connect the SCX-4725FN to the computer, and it’s all done.

The control panel is simple and easy to use, with different button sets for each function. This allows ease of use, without getting confused over what button is for which function, or having to follow a menu.

The automatic document feeder on the top is good for 50 sheets, and works well. There is also a multipurpose paper tray for non standard sizes like envelopes or labels.

Overall the SCX-4725FN is a solid multifunction device for the most environments. It a reliable performer that won’t let you down. Consumables last a decent amount of time and don’t cost the too much.

Toshiba E Studio 203L

The Toshiba E-Studio 203L is a member of an ever widening range of multifunction devices from the Japanese manufacturing giant. The E-Studio 203L is also aimed firmly at business as this is definitely a business class workgroup machine. It would suit a small to medium office with low to medium monthly duty requirements.

Once unpacked, the device can be working in minutes. The setup process is straightforward, and is suitable to users of all skill levels. The E-Studio 203L comes with USB, Ethernet, wireless and parallel connections built in. Ethernet and USB were up and running as soon as they were connected and the drivers installed. Wireless took a little longer, but nothing outrageous.

The control panel is laid out well, with a movable screen that can be tilted to suit. The touch screen is intuitive and easy to read, while having all the features logically laid out. There is a comprehensive array of buttons for even the most demanding of users, while almost all the functions can be accessed over a network.

The build quality is solid, with a reassuring feel, none of the trays feel flimsy or weak, and overall it looks built to last.

The standard paper tray holds 550 the multipurpose tray a further 100, and the document bypass 100 more. Toner is handled discreetly, and replacement cartridges are good for 23000 pages. The device also has a toner save feature, that once activated, offers to save toner by applying it a little thinner on each print. If you don’t mind lighter documents, this can save quite a lot of money in a busy environment.

Printing and Copying produced quality pages, with text appearing clean and clear. Documents containing images were okay for a laser multifunction, we were pleased with the outcome. It is often hit and miss with lasers as to how they can handle a photograph or image, and the E-Studio 203L handled them well. The speed of operation is also acceptable with a print or copy coming out at up to 20 pages per minute.

This is a very flexible machine that has enough features to serve any office well, with more optional feature to allow it to grow with you. The E-Studio 203L is a good prospect for almost any office.

HP LaserJet P1505

HPs compact Laserjet P1505 is aimed at the entry level end of the laser market, ideally single user or small workgroups. It doesnt have an LCD screen, but uses buttons and coded lights to indicate its status. Its also USB only, although there is an alternative in the P1505n, its almost $100 more in some stores.
Setting up is simple enough, once you figure out that the instructions arent on paper, they are on the CD. We looked in vain for the setup guide, and only found it once we explored the driver CD. It might have been nice to have that mentioned somewhere, but once you figure that out, its plain sailing. The digital manual is comprehensive and will have you up and running in no time.

The printer isnt overly large at just 14.9 x 9.6 x 8.9 inches and 12.9 pounds. There is a flap at the front which folds down to expose the 250 sheet paper tray which makes the P1505 so compact. There is also a 100 sheet output bin at the top and a button to open the door access to the toner cartridge. The monthly duty cycle is 8000 pages, and the toner lasts for 3000, but is an all-in-one cartridge so there are no other running costs to consider.

Plain text is handled sufficiently well for the probable workload. Hewlett Packards spherical toner system means we saw little to no splintering around characters and text was handled well overall. Photos and graphics werent so lucky, with some banding apparent on more detailed pictures. The 600 dpi print engine seemed to struggle a bit, but not so much as to make the P1505 untenable.

However, if print quality is average, print speeds are anything but. Our test document which includes a mixture of both text and graphics was handled with aplomb, hitting 22ppm in both normal and draft modes. Warm up from power off was a little over 10 seconds and around 6 in standby mode. In fact, the document printing rate is on a par with many more expensive printers from recent tests we have conducted.

If youre after a fast and affordable mono laser printer for the home office, the HP LaserJet P1505 will do the job.

Lanier 5635

The Lanier 5635 is another quality copier from Lanier, a division of Ricoh. It is a full size machine aimed directly at the large business or workgroup. It offers features and upgrade options to allow it to be at home in any kind of situation.

The controls are simple enough to be able to service most needs and the helpful LCD screen is easy to read. The type, size and scope of the control panel depends on which version of the Lanier 5635 you have. The standard 5635 only has the copier, the printer, fax and scanner are all options, and the control panel reflects that.

As a digital copier, the 5635 processes copying jobs in good time, producing 35 copies per minute with 600-dpi image quality for crisp, clean prints. The large touch screen allows walk-up users to easily set up copy, print, fax and scanning jobs if all the options are present.

The optional fax module elevates the 5635 to a true multifunction device. With 400 quick-dial numbers, and multiple communication ports, the 5635 allows users to maintain productivity by utilizing a quick scanner to send documents. Documents scanned for copying, printing or faxing can be stored in the 5635s built-in hard drive, creating a document repository that can be accessed over a network and reproduced on demand. This network scanning function allows users to convert paper into digital documents that can be distributed to any valid e-mail address.

Copy reproduction is very good, with text appearing clean and sharp. Images looked a little on the dark side, which is actually good for presentations. Color is rendered in grayscale accurately and graphs and photos appeared vivid and clear.

Overall, the 5635 is a good, device with a rich enough repertoire to satisfy most busy office needs. It’s good value for money, and the optional upgrades like the printer, scanner and fax are good ideas if you need them. With that replacement toners are readily available and good value, while robust enough to last the test of time. At $25 for 23000 pages worth of coverage, running costs are surprisingly low.

Those in the market for a good copier that can do other things if you want it to would be well advised to look at the Lanier 5635. It could be everything you need and more.

HP DeskJet 6980

A few months back when we were working on improving the standard of our library, I thought of buying a new printer for it. I wanted something which was fast so that more students and readers could benefit from it without wasting their time and at the same time I wished to have something which was less noisier from the old printer so that it doesn’t disturb the environment or the peace and quiet.

I now believe that buying HP DeskJet 6980 was the best thing I could have done. It is just great, and fulfills all the main requirements of a printer in the library. It has some great features which includes extra cartridges, Wi-Fi as well as wired Ethernet printing and print sharing. It even allows direct photo printing from cameras with the PictBridge feature. It features a 250 sheet plain paper tray so that it is easy for me to know how many papers have been used in the entire day. It helps me keep my limit for paper usage daily.

It has been in use for a few months now and during this time, there has been no report of its technical fault or anything negative. It is absolutely reliable and works without making a fuss. Its RAM memory size is 32 MB which is just enough for my needs. It does not have a scanner though it does have its own printer server for networking. Its print speed is really high which includes maximum speed of 36 pages per minute for black and white and 27 pages for color. It therefore allows a chance for all readers to make a use of it and nobody is kept waiting.

The main thing is that it is simple and easy to use. Most of the time I have readers in the library who are not exactly technical, so it can be difficult for them to have their own prints done. However I have noticed that only after explaining them once they are able to operate it with ease. Everything is laid out logically, the buttons and menus are clear and unambiguous.

Overall this has been a great asset to the library and all my readers and even the teaching staff are very happy with it.

Konica Minolta PagePro 1350W

I’m a journalist, so when I need something, it’s normally right now. Time is important to me as my life revolves around deadlines. That’s one of the reasons I bought the Konica Minolta PagePro 1350W.

It’s a tiny thing that produces good quality mono prints at 15 pages per minute. It’s only something like 15 inches wide, by 12 deep and the same high, and weighs 17 pounds. There are personal desktops that are bigger than that. For such a small footprint is packs quite a bit of punch.

This is currently the fastest printer in its class, which is why I chose it. The print quality is good enough for me to be able to print then submit straight to an editor images and all. Lasers often tend to fail when printing photos or images, but the PagePro 1350W holds its own. The grayscale is well utilized, with the 256 available shades simulating color well. It makes it easier to predict what the published piece will look like in a paper, which saves me a lot of time. Text quality is crisp and clear whatever size point I use. Ink fill is even if I use headline fonts, and details fine enough when using superscript.

The printer can be set up using either USB or network. I’m sure it could handle workgroups or something if you added a print server. The 8Mb buffer seems to cope well enough, even if I sent it a larger print job occasionally. The other great thing about this printer is that it’s quiet. If I’m on the phone doing an interview or something I can hardly hear it when it’s churning out my proofs. You can hear the print engine if it’s quiet and nothing else is going on, but apart from that it’s hardly noticeable.

Build quality seems sound, I haven’t had any problems with it anyway. The paper drawer is at the front near the bottom, and the paper is fed through in a “C” shape to end up on the top. The paper tray is said to be able to hold 100 sheets, but mine get curled up after about 15. Something to watch if you printer larger jobs.

If you’re looking for a good, reliable printer that won’t take up much room then the PagePro 1350W will do. It’s quiet, reliable and produces prints of sufficient quality for almost all uses. I heartily recommend it.

Lexmark C780

Who wants slow printers with poor resolution even if you have to pay less upfront? It never hurts to pay more and get great resolution and quality with your color prints without clogging the printing jobs queue at your busy workplace. It was this that prompted me to buy the Lexmark C780 laser color printer for my office where we have to print hundreds of pages every day, not to mention the high-quality photos and images that this printer produces.

The Lexmark C780 laser printer is one of the newer and more sophisticated machines being manufactured by the company. The printer gives a resolution of 1200 x 1200 dots per inch and has an extendable memory chip of up to 768Mb. The advertised speed is 29 pages per minute for color prints and 33 pages per minute for black and white ones. However we have experienced it to be a little slower than that, but that’s the case with most of the other models of laser printers. Overall, I am pretty satisfied with the speed.

The printer is easy to install and there are no complications with the software. I have not experienced any problems so far. Unlike the older models fold by Lexmark, the C780 comes with a built in Ethernet port. I find it a really handy option as we have the printer connected to a network and most employees can use it, and they have to.

I find a number of other useful features in this model that I did not get with some of my older printers. The sheet capacity is 600 in the front tray, saving us the hassle of loading paper too frequently. I can also feed different types and sizes of paper other than the standard pages used for printing such as envelopes, transparencies, etc. The overall quality of color printing is simply superb, and I am pretty satisfied with the high quality photos that we have to print sometimes at our office. I am also free of the worry of changing toners as they last for a fair period of time. The printer is also compatible for with most of the usual operating systems that we have installed in PC’s these days.

I recommend the Lexmark C780 laser printer for offices and workplaces where there is a heavy load of printing work done. The color printing quality of C780 also makes it a good choice for users who have to print photos and other high quality images.

Xerox Phaser 3150

The Xerox Phaser 3150 is a professional black and white laser printer. It prints with a speed of about 22 pages per minute and is fairly quiet while doing it. Many readers online and other customers have rated this product as their top pick. The reason why is because the Xerox Phaser 3150 is tough and reliable and takes care of all business needs in an efficient manner. When shopping for a document processor for a business you need to keep in mind some factors like the price, special features and how the machine will help them to increase the work flow in the office.

The unit in the office should be fast, reliable, increase productivity and last for a long time and also be very easy to use. Lexmark E250d

The Lexmark E250d is a monochrome laser printer and an ideal solution to everyday printing needs of the average small office. It would suit almost any situation as it is fast enough for the most demanding users, and produces prints of a quality high enough that you can’t help but be impressed.

At 28 pages per minute, the E250d is plenty quick enough for most users. The built-in duplexer is a nice bonus for a printer at this level, offering the ability to print double sided. Text prints are reproduced in high quality 1200 dpi, with clean lines and crisp edging. Image production is surprising, appearing in even better quality than the text. We know that images and photos aren’t the strong point of any laser printer, but it surprised us that the images were of such a high quality with the E250d that they outshone the text print.

The E250d would suit a small of home business with a low demand user base. It isn’t designed, or marketed for high duty cycle requirements. Build quality, cost effectiveness and reliability are the main selling points of this printer, and where its strengths really lie. Being so simple, the E250d is very easy to manage. There is no LCD screen, two buttons and five LED status lights. Any management of the printer will have to be done via the drivers.

The paper drawer holds 250 sheets, which is upgradeable to 800. It can be connected via USB or network with driver setup and administration is as easy as it is possible to be. Like others in the Lexmark range, adding this device to a network takes no time at all. The duplexer is unexpected at this price, but works well and didn’t perform as though any compromises were made to make it fit within budget.

The toner cartridges are easy to manage and replace. The cartridges and drums are readily available online and are quite good value for money. A single high yield toner cartridge is good for 4500 pages and retails for $50 at Quikshiptoner.com, whereas a drum will cost a mere $70 for 25000 pages.

The E250d is a good printer that provides prints of great quality. Ownership costs are reasonable enough to be worthy of consideration for anyone who is looking for a mono laser printer.

Lexmark C524

Having to buy cartridges for your inkjet all the time is a real problem with all of us who have to print a lot of documents every day. It’s strange how people tend to think that they have saved money by buying a normal inkjet but fail to realize that in the long run it costs more as you have to change cartridges more frequently with an inkjet than replacing toners if you have a laser printer. I have a lot of printing to do at the office, and recently I switched over to the Lexmark C524 color laser printer.

The laser printer saves me a trip to the store every few weeks for buying cartridges. The Lexmark C524 has four toners installed for black, magenta, yellow and cyan. The color prints resolution is 1200x1200 dpi and the image quality is great. I have much better color prints than I used to have with the inkjet. Not to mention the fact that any photo in high-quality costs much more with the inkjet.

The Lexmark C524 advertises a speed of 20 pages per minute. It is a little less than that in practical use as the machine takes thirty to 50 seconds in warming up. So for single prints, you have to wait for a while but the average speed is fine for batch printing. Toners need not be replaced that frequently and if one color toner runs out you need to replace that only so it’s still more economical than the inkjet.

I found the software that comes with the printer pretty simple to install and run. The printer is also compatible with Unix on the PC. It might not take you more than ten minutes to start printing after unloading the box. I have not yet encountered any software problems and the printer does not jam, something that frequently takes place with my inkjet. This model in the series has both a USB and parallel port but there is no Ethernet option so if you have a large workgroup using the same printer than there is a little problem with the Lexmark C524 as you cannot connect it to over a network.

The superior quality of color printing, especially high-quality photos, and the economy of the Lexmark C524 makes me really satisfied with my purchase and I recommend this model of laser printer for all those small offices where there is a lot of color printing required.
