Samsung ML 2570 Laser Printer

OVERVIEW:  In that traditional American sprit of entrepreneurship, more and more people today are setting up their own small businesses: be it in a leased office, in the garage, or in a spare bedroom. And with every small business, there is a need to keep expenses down while you’re starting up. The older sibling to the ML-2510, the Samsung ML-2570 offers higher resolutions for sharper B&W prints, more print memory, and decent paper capacity, all packaged in a neat, compact size.

PROS:
This monochrome laser (that’s what the “ML” in ML-2570 stands for), occupies an area just over one square foot on your desk or shelf.

This laser can accept a range of paper weights from 16 to 43# for both paper trays, giving its owner a wider range of paper choices than some other printer brands would allow. However, for manual 2-sided printing (you’re flipping the paper over yourself) use 20-24# weight paper to save yourself some grief.

When you flip open the door on the front of the ML-2570, it reveals the 250-sheet paper tray. The single-sheet manual feeder is above the main paper tray, for printing labels, cards, and transparencies (and make sure to use transparencies that are “laser printer safe”). The main tray can handle a variety of sizes: from postcard (3” x 5”) to legal (8 ½” x 11”). The ML-2570’s larger paper and toner capacity makes it ideal for people who rely on printing throughout the day or an office having multiple computers sharing a single printer.

For such an affordable laser printer, the ML-2570 prints extremely fast. After the initial warm-up time, letter-size paper prints at 25 pages per minute, making this one of the fastest of the ML 2000 series.

Having a maximum resolution of 1200 x 1200 dpi, the ML-2570 is great for printing text and B&W photos. The Toner Save feature, only available in it’s 600 x 600 dpi resolution, still produces printouts that are clear and readable.

For small-press desktop publishers using Wintel machines, Samsung’s software CD gives advanced printing features, like booklet printing and large-format poster creation. Sorry Mac and Linux users-- you’ll have to find those features in whatever publishing software you are using to get the same results.

As your business grows, the ML-2570 will still be able to meet your print needs.  With 32MB of non-expandable RAM, the ML-2570 can handle larger print jobs and multiple jobs (if shared or networked with an optional adapter). Understanding the printing needs of today’s businesses and the software applications and suites they often use, Samsung has installed PostScript and PCL6 emulators, as well as their proprietary SPL.

It’s nice that Samsung recognizes there are other operating systems than the one from Redmond. Samsung provides software support for the “Big 3” (Windows, Mac OS, and Linux). Now you don’t have to be chained to one operating system just because your printer can only support one.

An external network attachment will give the ML-2570 the ability to be a network server. But without a way to increase the printer’s memory, the ML-2570 will struggle with simultaneous job requests. For the cost of the network attachment, you can upgrade to a more powerful network printer.

CONS:
This is not so much a problem with the printer, just with the printer’s users. One disadvantage to the ML-2570’s smaller size is many people think it can be wedged anywhere without regard to its ventilation needs. To keep from cooking its internal parts and to prolong the printer’s life I would recommend (1) don’t put the printer where the air-vents are going to be blocked (leave 3” - 4” clearance), and (2) turn the printer off at the end of the day. (Remember what your mother would tell you about turning the lights off when you leave a room?)

In start-up, wake-up, and in operation, the ML-2570 produces 53 dB of sound, and 35dB of noise in standby. Think of 53 decibels as the sound of low conversations and 30 decibels as a quiet office. While 53 decibels may not be loud, it is if the printer is sitting next to you chugging off 50 pages.

The ML-2570 has a 25 second wake-up delay, with a 9s delay between print jobs.  A long delay when you turn on the printer in the morning isn’t a big issue, but the ML-2570 goes automatically into a power-saving sleep mode when it’s inactive. Add all this up and the 25 ppm speed boost is lost with all the delays.

INK / TONER NEEDS:
A big disappointment is the ML-2570 ships with a toner cartridge that’s only 1/3 full. This so-called “starter cartridge” prints about 1000 pages, or 2 reams of paper. So it might be a good idea to go ahead and buy the full yield toner the same time you buy the printer.
The ML-2570 will use the same toner cartridge as the ML-2010, with a standard yield of about 3,000 pages, or six reams of paper.
The Samsung does not offer a high-capacity toner for the ML-2570.

SOFTWARE:
The ML-2570 has one of the better software packages. Not only does it have the basic printing properties for Mac and Linux systems, but for Windows users there’s also an advanced printing section that allows for booklet printing, creating a large poster mosaics, and watermarks.

Samsung SCX 6322DN 4 in 1 Multi function 2 Sided Laser Printer

OVERVIEW: Mr. Cheapskates finally allowed the company to replace the old dot-matrix printer, 9.6K baud fax, and mimeograph machine. Now it’s up to you to find a replacement that can keep up with the times, take up less space (because you shared office space the previous machines), allow for expansion, and of course at a price that might make your boss give back the 1972 cost-of-living pay increase. Let the Samsung SCX-6322DN 4-in-1 multifunction laser printer speed you back to personal financial recovery.

PROS:
If you don’t want to turn on the computer every time you want to make a copy, a fax, or e-mail a scan, you don’t have to.  The SCX-6322DN has a full control panel with an on-screen menu for printer setup and operation without the need for software. A traditional QWERTY keyboard as well as a numeric keypad allows for text and number entries. Twenty programmable keys allow for 1-touch dialing for up to 40 fax numbers. An address book function allows for more frequently used fax numbers to be stored and retrieved, speed dialing of 240 numbers. To protect unwanted access, fax pages can be stored in 8MB memory; a 4-digit security password can be activated to allow authorized users to print the stored faxes. A pass-through external phone jack on the back of the printer allows for plugging a telephone or an answering machine. Finally, the SCX-6322DN has a “junk fax barrier” to reduce the amount of unsolicited faxes.
The Duplex Automatic Document Feeder (DADF) allows copying or scanning of up to 50 2-sided originals. The SCX-6322DN can also perform 2-sided printing reducing time and costs.
This printer has some serious paper capacity. The SCX-6322DN comes standard with a 550-sheet cassette tray, capable of holding over a ream of letter or legal-size paper. The flip-door on the side of the printer reveals a 100-sheet multi-purpose tray that can handle transparencies, labels, post cards, envelopes, and to 8½” x 14” legal paper of various bond weights. If that’s not enough, a second 550-sheet cassette can be stacked to provide over 2 reams of paper input capacity

The color scanner portion of the SCX-6322DN is compatible with TWAIN & and XP/Vista’s WIA standards, allowing scans to be sent via e-mail, FTP, or SMB.  Copy options include changing image magnification from 0.25 to 4 times the original size, and up to 999 multi-page copying. Printing speeds after a 13 second warm-up are about 23 pages per second.

The “N” in SCX-6322DN is for “networking”.  Having built-in Ethernet network support, parallel, and a hi-speed USB, this multifunction is right at home either in the middle of an office floor or connected to a secretary’s computer. The built-in 64MB of printer memory enables the SCX-6322DN to handle printing demands from multiple computers. Administrators can manage the printer’s settings remotely using Samsung’s SyncThru web service.
Offices that use Microsoft and Adobe software will appreciate the PostScript3 and HP PCL6 print emulator drivers.

CONS:
This 4-in-1 is one of Samsung’s noisier multi-function printers. In operation, the SCX-6322DN produces 65dB of sound and 40db sitting idle. To give you an idea of that means, 60dB is the sound of normal conversations and 40db is the sound level of whispering.

Being a multi-purpose printer, one would expect the software to provide full functions for all the computer platforms Samsung claims it supports.  Software support for Mac OS users is limited to printer drivers. Any scanning done through a Mac requires the user having to buy 3rd party software to use it, such as Adobe Photoshop or PhotoDeluxe.

INK/TONER NEEDS:
The SCX-6322DN has separate toner and drum to help reduce overall consumables costs. The standard 8,000-page starter toner and drum cartridges are included in the box. The drum unit will need to be replaced ever 20,000 pages—which is about the same time the DADF rubber pad will need replacing.

SOFTWARE:
The software in the CD-ROM is primarily for Windows compatible machines. For Windows users, the SmartThru software provides the most features, supporting not only scanning and printing, but offering an advanced printing section that allows for booklet printing, creating a large poster mosaics, and watermarks.

The Linux software package is not included with the CD and has to be downloaded from Samsung’s website to support printer and scanning functions. The Linux Unified Driver Configurator software allows for scanned images to manipulated and edited.

Only the print drivers and basic features are available for Mac OS users.
To make network printer configurations and notifications easy, Samsung’s SyncThru Web Service allows printer changes to be made using your IE, Safari, or Firefox browser. The software is not part of the CD and has to be downloaded from Samsung’s web site.

Canon Print head cleaning instructions

This information is presented to help you unclog your print head. If you follow the instructions it should work fine. However dont blame me for messing up your print head if things go wrong. Also poor output can be a indication of a failing print head. So this information will help you diagnose the problem.

In your browsers address bar type: control panelprinters and hit enter on your keyboard. This will bring up a page with your installed printers icon. Place your mouse cursor over the Printer/Printers & Faxes icon and right-click on it. When the dropdown menu shows, click on Properties. This will bring up the printer utility. Look for the Maintenance tab and follow the cleaning prompts.

If the cleaning cycles dont do the trick in clearing up poor and incomplete output, dont give up and assume youll need to buy a new print head. You can try the following as it will cause no harm many others have succesfully done this Open the lid of the printer and when the print head moves to the left, remove the cartridges or (tanks). You should then be able to easily remove the print head. It has the electronic circuitry on it and on the bottom are the outlet nozzles.

Get a small, shallow pan and lay a couple of paper towels or coffee filters in the bottom. Warm them up in the microwave oven. Pour enough DISTILLED water (some people have successfully used Windex but we would not recommend it) into the pan to cover the paper towels. Set the print head on the towels. You should see ink being "wicked" out. Move the print head to several different spots (about a minute each spot). This will dissolve the ink clogs. Remove the print head and gently dab it dry on fresh paper towels.

Place the print head back in the printer and insert the ink cartridges (tanks). Run a print head alignment and a regular cleaning followed by test print. You may need to repeat the process to completely un-clog the print head. Some prople have skipped the use of paper towels and have just let the print head soak in the warm distilled water/Windex.Thats all there is to it.

Distilled water -- Water that has been treated by boiling and condensation to remove solids, inorganics, and some organic chemicals.
